You’ve heard of Spring Cleaning, but when’s the last time you’ve gone through a Fall Cleaning check list? Now that a new season is creeping up this month it’s time to get in the zone by switching gears, centered around September chores. In this post we’ll go over items and tasks to focus on as Fall sets in.

1. Umbrella Stands

Sleet and snow may be more abundant in some areas than other’s but there’s no better time than now to make sure your umbrella stands are ready for the weather. Empty the stand and remove any accumulated water or debris. Wipe the interior and exterior with a damp cloth and mild soap, then rinse and dry thoroughly. For metal stands, check for rust and treat it with a rust remover if needed.

2. Under Bed Storage

It’s time to swap out your wardrobe for warmer attire. Slide out any under-bed containers and switch clothes as needed. Vacuum or wipe the storage bins with a damp cloth. Dust or vacuum the floor under the bed before returning the containers.

3. Pantry

Make way for this year’s holiday-time canned goods and seasonal flavors. Remove all items and check expiration dates, discarding anything expired. Wipe down shelves with a mild cleaner or a mix of vinegar and water. Let dry completely before organizing and restocking items neatly.

4. Backpacks / Shoulder Bags

Whether you have back-to-schooler’s or any bag-user in the house, we’d bet that it’s been awhile since the last time they were cleaned out. Empty all contents of bags and shake out crumbs or debris. Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap, or machine wash if the material allows (check the label). Let air dry completely, ideally outdoors.

5. Lunchboxes

Similarly to number four, any lunchboxes within your household are most likely overdue for a cleaning. Empty and rinse out any food residue. Clean thoroughly with warm, soapy water or a disinfectant wipe, paying attention to seams and corners. Let air dry fully before next use to prevent mildew.

6. Laundry Hampers

While hampers typically don’t require regular cleaning, it’s nice to refresh them every once in a while. This is especially true if they have wheels and roll around the house. Empty the hamper and vacuum or shake out any lint or debris. Wipe down the interior with a disinfectant and repeat process on wheels if applicable. Let them dry completely before placing clothes back inside.

7. Seasonal Decorative Pieces

Summer is over, and it’s time to put any festive summery decor away. Dust off each piece with a microfiber cloth or soft brush. Spot clean with a damp cloth if needed, especially for glass, ceramic, or plastic items. Store in labeled bins with padding to protect fragile items.

8. Flower Vases

If you’re an avid flower lover and keep your home stocked with fresh blooms, it’s time to cleanse those vases. Empty any water and remove plant residue. Scrub the inside with warm, soapy water and a bottle brush or vinegar solution to remove buildup. Rinse well and dry before storing or reusing.

Swing into September prepared and refreshed! Using this list, you can get a head start on the changing season. Your home will feel restored and ready for life’s next quarterly chapter, and so will you.
