Have you been noticing sudden breakouts in your skin? If this happens even though you are taking extra good care of your skin, then it is time to look at your makeup brushes and sponge applicators and ask yourself when was the last time you had them cleaned. If you are scared of ruining your precious brushes by washing them, then you must know that there are ways to wash them naturally that will not ruin the texture of the bristles while allowing them to hold their shape throughout. Here’s how you can turn your old dirty brushes brand new!

Cleaning makeup brushes naturally:

Fortunately, brushes are pretty easy to clean and will be as good as new once you follow these steps mentioned below.

What you will need:

  • Dirty makeup brushes
  • Two jars with wide mouth
  • Warm water
  • Clean white microfiber cloths
  • Castile soap

What you will need to do:

Step 1: Take one of the jars and fill it with warm water at least halfway through and add a teaspoon of Castile soap. Firstly, Castile soap is nontoxic and natural, and since it is an oil based medium, it will easily dissolve all other oils. Make sure that the warm water is not too hot that it dissolves the glue that holds the brush bristles together when coupled with the glue.

Step 2: Swirl each of the brushes vigorously inside the jar holding the mixture one by one for about 30 seconds to dislodge any of the makeup residues. Hold the brushes against the walls of the jar and press gently for about 5 to 10 seconds. This will help remove more of the leftovers of your makeup.

Step 3: Take it out of the jar and run it under warm water for 5 seconds to rinse it clean.

Step 4: Taking the clean white washcloth, press it against the brush bristles to remove the water and pat dry. If you still see remnants of makeup, repeat the steps 1 to 3.

Step 5: After making sure that your brushes are completely clean, take the second jar and place them sitting upright, letting it air dry. Wait at least 12 hours before the next time you use it.

Step 6: Once clean and dry, tap the brushes against your clean hand to fluff it up a bit.

Cleaning makeup sponge applicators naturally:

Makeup sponge applicators are a bit more stubborn, and it is not the easiest thing to clean. At least not without the fear of completely ruining it. It is always better to keep a couple of extra at hand, however, if you are left with no other choice, use these steps to clean your makeup sponge applicators.

What you will need:

  • A small bowl
  • Warm water
  • Clean white washcloths
  • Castile soap

What you will need to do:

Step 1: In the small bowl, mix in ¼ cup of warm water with the same amount of castile soap.

Step 2: Dip the sponge end of the applicator into the solution in the bowl while simultaneously using your forefinger and thumb to squeeze it to clean. While doing this make sure the sponge does not soak up too much of the solution as it will dissolve the glue holding it in place.

Step 3: Rinse the sponge applicator quickly under running water, before pressing it on the sides of the sink’s edge to remove excess water.

Step 4: Place the sponge in between two folds of a washcloth and press gently. Be careful as the applicator is quite fragile now and any movement might dislodge the sponge part from the applicator.

Step 5: Carefully place them over the washcloth and wait at least 12 hours before the next time you use it.
